  • Apogean - Second album from Canadian tech death band. Their previous album was in my top albums list in 2024 and I’ve been looking forward to this one for awhile. They are signed to The Artisan Era which is always a good thing. Not a bad band on that label.

  • Volubilis - Debut album from melodic progressive death metal band out of Canada. Taking inspiration from several genres, this one should be an interesting listen.

This year has been super solid for new metal and I’m not sure how I’m going to narrow it down for the year end list.

Black Galactic by Dissentient

Progressive Death Metal from Canada

Top notch progressive death metal. Some really nasty riffs with great drum and bass work. Any fans of progressive or technical death metal don’t miss this one.

The Silent Abscission by Inherits the Void

Melodic Black Metal from France

Fourth album from this solo project. I think it’s his best album and it’s quite amazing. From his Bandcamp: “For this opus, AS surrounded himself with exceptional musicians, for the first time expanding Inherits The Void to a full recording lineup: Romain Negro (Apolaustic, ex-Stortregn) on vocals and Nicolas Müller (Akiavel, ex-Artefact, ex-Svart Crown) on drums give shape and power to this vision.”

Melodic Black Metal from the Netherlands

This duo formed in 2020 and have released an album every year since. I discovered them in 2024 when IV released and every one since then has been on my year end list with last year’s release being my AOTY. They are very consistent with releases and have not had a bad one. This one is again some incredible melodic black metal and should not be missed.

Atmospheric Depressive Black Metal from the US

Some of you may know that it’s been kind of a rough time for me lately so doom and depressive black metal have been fitting right in with me. This one came out right at the right time and it’s been helping. I’m not a huge fan of all depressive black metal but this one with the atmospheric elements is perfect.

Incredible album from Iceland. For a smaller country with a relatively low population, some really good metal comes out of there. Debut album from these guys and a definite listen for black metal fans.

Brazilian death metal band Ereboros releases “In the Depths of Misery,” the first single from the upcoming album From Oblivion to the Grave, due out independently on October 30.

“In the Depths of Misery” addresses social inequality, psychological control and the way fear and ignorance can become instruments of domination. At its core, the song deals with a form of imprisonment that does not depend on walls: the one created inside the human mind.

The track introduces the central themes of From Oblivion to the Grave, an album shaped by real experiences of suffering, anxiety, disillusionment and the search for meaning during periods of personal instability. Much of the material was influenced by difficult moments experienced by the band’s vocalist and drummer.

Musically, the album is built around aggressive death metal, heavy riffs and oppressive atmospheres, balanced by melodic sections that reinforce the emotional weight of the songs. Its ten tracks maintain a constant sense of tension, reflecting the psychological and emotional themes behind the lyrics.

Approach of the long awaited second album release of epic melodeath ambassador Ulthima is being announced with an opening single “White Raven”. From Monterrey Mexico, to Helsinki Finland, the band came to be known in the Finnish metal scene with their Debut album “Symphony of the Night” in 2021, and is set to release their second full album in the autumn of 2026.

“White Raven” explores the journey from fearing death to accepting it as a natural part of existence. Guided by the symbol of the White Raven, the song blends mythological imagery and reflection on mortality, portraying death not as an end, but as a passage into eternity.

The guitarist and composer Ric tells about the song: “White raven is one of the last songs I wrote for this album. It’s one of those that come out of nowhere with just one small riff and rapidly developed in a full length song. It always felt very organic while it was put together and definitely one of the best ones in the album.

Lyric wise I wanted a deep topic for it. While it is a bit cliche talking about death and all that, I felt it was a fitting for this song as it is something we can all relate to.

With this album, we set out to sharpen and define our identity as a band. Instead of pursuing a polished, overly perfected production, we embraced a rawer and more organic sound that captures the intensity and spirit of our music. We wanted the album to feel alive—heavy, aggressive, and honest—while preserving the human element that often gets lost in modern productions. The result is our most authentic release to date, a record that reflects who we are as musicians and delivers our vision with power, atmosphere, and conviction.”

Ulthima is a band that originated back in 2010 in Monterrey Mexico, the band went on hiatus until 2018 in Helsinki Finland. Where the band finally consolidated its members and finished their first full length album Symphony of the Night. In mid 2024 the band started the recording of their second full length album Midnight’s Call, which will be released in the fall of 2026.

  • Inherits the Void - Fourth album from atmospheric melodic black metal solo project out of France. I’m a big fan of the 2024 album Scars of Yesteryears and really looking forward to this one. For this album, he’s using some guest musicians; Romain Negro (Apolaustic, ex-Stortregn) on vocals and Nicolas Müller (Akiavel, ex-Artefact, ex-Svart Crown) on drums.

  • In Vespro - Debut album from Italian death / doom metal band. Reminiscent of early ‘90s doom, like Katatonia and Anathema.

  • Mossystone - Debut album after an EP out earlier this year from solo atmospheric black metal project. “Paysages Tristes — dedicated to autumn, to moss-covered stones, and to all those who continue to wander within these sorrowful landscapes.” This one is out today.

The Finnish atmospheric black metal band Beyond Seventh Dimension are set to release the debut album ‘Tähtien ikuinen suru’ on September 4th 2026 via Inverse Records. The new single ‘Silurian Seas’ is unleashed today and it’s available on all essential streaming services: https://push.fm/fl/b7thd-silurian-seas

The band comments:
“This song is inspired by The Silurian Period beginning about 443.8 million years lasting approximately 24.6 million years. An era where most life on Earth was Still in the oceans. A time when lonely winds blew and rains fell on an empty domain.”

BIOGRAPHY:
Beyond Seventh Dimension is an atmospheric metal project from Finland that started as a one-man instrumental project in 2025 and quickly escalated. Vocals were added to the concept right after the first song, and suddenly there was talk of an EP or a full-length album. Now there is an album, and there has also been talk of making a proper band out of this at some point, but time will tell.

Which for me is about the only good thing about May. Life has been…..challenging lately. Several things going on but the main thing is I just lost my 4 legged best friend. Because of that, this post is a little later than I had hoped and not quite as much about each one. But hopefully if you haven’t heard these, you will enjoy them. I really need to spend more time with all of them. I just haven’t had enough time to listen as much as I would like and I think most of these will help get me through. Melodic Black Metal from the US

Debut album from this band out of Portland. Their Bandcamp shows why this one speaks to me: “Here to craft music that tells the tale of life’s deepest sorrows. One of my favorite bands. I am so happy to see Lisa Johansson back on clean vocals. A lot of people seem to like Heike Langhans better but there is just something about Lisa being in here. Maybe it’s because their 2008 album, Turning Season Within, is in my top 10 albums of all time.

I became a big fan of this band this year. Euch’Mau Noir bis made my February best albums list. As it turns out, that one is a re-recording of their 2024 album with an additional song on it. It’s still incredible though. And this one is at least as good and I can’t wait for future stuff from them.

Sophomore album 7 years on from their debut. Really great death / doom. The band crafts an essential and visceral musical language, where crushing heaviness supports deeply introspective lyrics.”

Following the release of their debut record, "Upon the Edge of Darkness", South Australia’s Lumen Ad Mortem returns this summer with "A Grave Ascent" - a striking dose of ferocious black metal that balances perfectly between an energetic drive fueled by lightning-fast tremolo riffs and a mid-paced dirge drenched in atmosphere.

Crafting anthemic black metal with unrelenting intensity, these new offerings are chock-full of nefarious melodies, wrapped around rhythm guitars and bass that retain a malleable nature, ominous synth lines and drums that relentlessly drive the energy forward. Lyrically, the new album draws from the Australian wellspring of loss, death, and the undying spirit that refuses defeat, driven by an unrelenting force of cold and undeniable vengeance.

Two songs from the forthcoming album have already been released - "I Never Ceded" and "Ghost Gums" - available to stream on Bandcamp, Ampwall, Youtube, and the usual digital platforms. The full "A Grave Ascent" album will be released Friday June 19.

A limited LP is available to pre-order, divided into 100 copies in the "Canyon Ember" variant and 100 copies in the "Riverbed Current" variant - shipping in September.
The CD is presented in a 6 panel digipack - shipping mid June at the time of the digital release.

Following their evolution from a studio project in 2022 into a full band in 2023, Kybalion continue to refine their identity with a release that is both sonically aggressive and conceptually driven. The new EP draws inspiration from Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s novel Der Verdacht (The Suspicion), exploring themes of absolute power and its psychological consequences - anxiety, guilt, and moral distortion.

Structured as four acts, Make the World Bleed represents different states of consciousness of an individual attempting to rise beyond human law and fear. The band frames this journey as an inevitable collapse: when a species is confronted with power too vast to comprehend or control, the result is destruction - it will make the world bleed.

Musically, Kybalion expand their modern black metal sound with dissonant textures, frantic riffing, and bleak atmospheres. Influenced by noir and obscure cinema, their compositions blend dark soundscapes, occasional d-beat passages, and decaying melodic lines, reinforcing the band’s stark and oppressive aesthetic.

Kybalion’s work remains deeply rooted in a visual and philosophical framework, drawing from Absurdism, Cosmic Pessimism, and Futurism. Their imagery evokes a grotesque extension of human conscience.

The EP’s cover art features “The Astral Body” (1903) by Sascha Schneider (Der Astralmensch).

Make the World Bleed will be released on June 5 via Non Serviam Records.

Bergen, Norway & Athens, Greece; 20 May 2026: Bergen-based melodic black metal outfit Sworn have announced that their fifth album, “Null Crowned the Infinite”, will be released on 4 September 2026. Pre-orders for the physical versions licensed to The Circle Music are available now.

Three years following the critically acclaimed “A Journey told through Fire” (2023), the new album navigates a sprawling conceptual narrative, tracing the cyclical nature of the cosmos from its initial spark in the void to its inevitable dissolution.

Lyrically, the album explores the terrifying scale of cosmic darkness and the fragility of existence within a primordial emptiness. Sworn investigates the philosophy of becoming and unmaking, where reality and time emerge from nothingness only to eventually collapse back into the same unfathomable origin. Musically, “Null Crowned the Infinite” pushes the boundaries of the band's established sound, balancing their signature melodic tension with newfound levels of aggression and atmospheric depth. The record features "The Starless Origin", a twelve-minute epic that stands as their longest composition to date, alongside "Fracture of Aeons", which the band identifies as their most aggressive track ever recorded.

Sworn collaborated with renowned producer Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios, who handled the mixing and mastering. Bogren’s legendary portfolio, featuring giants such as Opeth, Arch Enemy and Behemoth, brings a polished yet devastating edge to the performances of Max Wilson, Christoffer Kjørsvik, Gøran Hope and Tom Ian Klungland. The album artwork is equally striking, created by Pär Olofsson, known for his iconic work with Aborted and Kreator.

While Sworn continues to operate as an independent entity for the recording and production, they have partnered with The Circle Music to handle the physical releases under a special licensing deal. The release includes a Digipak CD alongside two distinct vinyl variants: Marbled Smoke and Marbled Green.

VOIDMAKER make their debut with A Cold, Unyielding Universe, an extreme metal album built around science fiction, cosmic dread and the question of what waits beyond the world humanity has already outgrown.

The project brings together multi-instrumentalist Joe McAnaney and vocalist Tom McRann. Across ten tracks, the album moves through blackened thrash, death metal and technical extreme metal, with fast riffing, progressive structures and a strong narrative pull. The record follows a journey into deep space, from the opening “Starfall” to the closing “Wormhole / Lightchaser”, using its cosmic setting to frame ideas of expansion, survival and the unknown.

Joe McAnaney handles guitars, drums and bass, giving the album its drive and technical side, while Tom McRann’s vocals bring the harsher, more urgent feel. Songs like “The Post-Human Emergence”, “Project Infinity”, “Terminus” and “Of Digital Creation” show VOIDMAKER moving between speed, melody and more complex sections, always keeping the science fiction concept in view.

The album was mixed and mastered by Rob Kukla at Obsidian Recording Studios. The cover artwork was created by Adam Burke of Nightjar Illustration.

Stand outs this week:

  • As The Sun Falls - Third album from Finnish melo death band. Melodic Death Metal and Finland is always a great combination I think.

  • Downfall of Nur - Second album from atmospheric black metal band out of Argentina. From their Bandcamp: “And the Firmament will Burn to Quench the Pain of this Earth unfolds as a profound reflection on the ancestral memory and deeply rooted symbols of Sardinia.”

  • Solipsism - Second album from Slovakian black metal band with negativity and melancholy. This one is darker than the debut album 4 years ago.

  • Barren Canyon - Third album 8 years on from atmospheric black metal band out of Canada. From their Bandcamp: “Taking the idea of “atmospheric metal” seriously and literally, A Virulent Stream draws both musically and lyrically upon themes of noxious air, suffocation, and the airborne contaminants of industrial society.”
